I was going to write this week’s blog post on the blue dress (you can see it in all its deconstructed glory in 'Goals for 2018') which I had planned on making this week, but it’s been so hot here that there was no way I was going to get out the iron if I could avoid it. Instead this week I've written about the fabric covered pattern weights I made.

I finally made it to the Edith Head exhibition in Bendigo. It’s crazy it took me this long to get there, particularly seeing as I only live a 30 minute drive away. I was going to go on the 3rd with some of the girls I studied costume with, but I ended up with tonsillitis on the day so I missed out. I went on Wednesday with my mum instead which was lovely.
Much to my delight photography was allowed in the exhibition – without flash, of course. It was a bit tricky taking photos of the costumes behind glass due to the reflections, but that didn’t stop me. Strap yourself in for a deliciously photo-filled read! I wanted to write my goals in a blog post rather than writing these on a piece of paper and popping it on my cork board.
Without further ado, here are my 2018 goals! Keep better records At the end of last year I started keeping a time log for everything I was working on. Because a lot of what I make are one-off costumes it can be hard to know exactly how long something will take. I’m getting much better at guesstimating the time thanks to the time logs I’ve been keeping. I want to start a ‘Makes Book’ which I’ll use to write in anything I make. I’ve also realised I need to improve my tax related records. This is how I feel when it comes to bookkeeping. It's been a while, hasn't it? Last year was an interesting one for me. I spent most of 2017 trying to figure out exactly what Little Grassbird is. Not the bird, you understand, I mean the business. That's not to say I didn't keep myself busy. Quite the contrary! A large part of the year was taken by making a cast of costumes for the Old Castlemaine Gaol. Very exciting indeed! Especially when one costume - the first warder's uniform I made - ended up on the telly not once but twice! The picture below is a work-in-progress shot of one of the hats I made. I'll be writing a post on the costumes which will be up quite soon. In the meantime if you're in the area you can have a look at them in person at the OCG. There's not much else to say in this post, it's more a hello and welcome back. I'm looking forward to keeping up with the blog this year!
Until next time, Little Grassbird xx |
